Mikao Usui

Mikao Usui

Mikao Usui, an tireless researcher, a man with incredible talent and a good heart, was born on August 15, 1864 in the village of Yago, Yamagata District, Gifu Prefecture. As a boy, Mikao was sent to train in a Buddhist monastery, where his interest in healing practices arose.

Mikao Usui was unusually talented and hardworking. In the West, he was accustomed to being called a doctor, rather than a sensei as in Japan, and Usui actually held a doctorate in literature. He possessed in-depth knowledge in the fields of medicine, psychology, theology, the art of divination, Ki Ko (the Japanese variety of Qigong), and other Eastern martial arts.

Studying ancient scriptures in Kyoto’s libraries, Mikao Usui became increasingly convinced that there was a way to unify with the energy of the Universe without the need for years of exercise and difficult practices. After years of searching, he went to the Kurama temples near the “power spots.” The sacred Kurama Mountain is located near the former capital of Japan, Kyoto, and is over 518 meters high. The mountain itself is a spiritual symbol of the Kurama temple complex, the creator of the Reiki system.

Mikao Usui spent 21 days in fasting, prayer, and meditation, achieved enlightenment, and created the Usui Shiki Ryoho system, which uses the “Universal Life Energy” for healing.

The use of keys (symbols) allows this energy to be sent through the meridians of the human body. Usui called this process Reiki, a combination of two hieroglyphs: Rei, meaning “universe,” “spirit,” “soul,” and Ki, meaning “energy,” “life.” It is commonly translated as “Universal Life Energy.”

Reiki is a healing technique that focuses on the transmission of life energy.

Mikao Usui had many students, and he dedicated sixteen of them to the rank of teacher in the Reiki system. He left his followers with the thought that Reiki is the path of compassion and wisdom, the path to happiness and harmony.

Soon after his death, Reiki spread to America from Hawaii by Takata and from there it reached Europe. In the years following the war, Reiki practitioners in America encountered difficulties in transmitting this system, due to the mistrust towards everything coming from Japan. Therefore, they spread the legend that Mikao Usui was a Christian monk, in order to gain people’s trust in the teachings coming from there.

The word Reiki in Japanese means Universal Life Energy that penetrates everything. This energy is concentrated in the chakras and is directed towards healing and recovery. It balances the energy of the body and there are no possible side or negative effects.

The system includes tuning the four upper chakras, meditation, and methods for harmonization and restoration of health. It works on physical, mental, emotional, and psychological levels. Traditional Reiki starts with the first level and can reach the Grand Master level.
